Declaration of Intent of Sigma Chi Sigma

As a newly formed, local fraternity on campus, we are currently petitioning to become an active chapter in the Sigma Chi national fraternity. We are a group of men dedicated to hard work, high achievement, and innovative ideas. Sigma Chi Sigma grew out of a number of students who desired to break from the perceived tradition of "Greek life" and its reputation of satisfied mediocrity demonstrated by excessive partying and general disregard for excellence in education. We are going to establish a social, Greek-letter fraternity that is concerned with the community, maintains a strong, honest relationship with the faculty and administration of Valparaiso University, and is committed to founding a solid, close-knit brotherhood based on Christian ideals, friendship and respect both for ourselves and for others.

As to our commitment to the community: we intend never to be an embarrassment to the community in which we reside. Instead we will strive to improve that community by engaging in activities that characterize a good and responsible neighbor. Our first project in the community is a volunteer program at the Valparaiso Boys Club, which allows for several members of our fraternity to supervise the children, lead group activities and act as positive role models. We intend to continue this program in the coming years, and as our brotherhood grows, offer our service to other organizations in the community that strive for the betterment of individuals and our society.

As to our commitment to education: we aim to raise academic standards within our fraternity because we realize that our primary purpose in attending college is to gain an education. We have decided to make a conscious effort to participate in class and to keep in close contact with each of our professors in order to be aware of our academic performance. If our performance is lacking we will seek immediate help from the professor and use all available sources of aid. We fully endorse the principles of the Honor System and "accept the duties and responsibilities of honorable conduct for the sake of the Valparaiso University community."

As to our commitment to fraternity social life: we understand that as a social fraternity, fraternizing plays an important role in our involvement on campus. Members of our fraternity use and enjoy alcoholic beverages. However, with the use of alcohol comes the obligation as brothers and citizens to act effectively on problems arising from alcohol abuse. We take this obligation seriously and commit ourselves to full cooperation with the administration on this issue.

With these ideals we hope to attract the ambitious, motivated students at Valparaiso University that share our beliefs. As a fraternity we want to contribute to our environment and set a new standard for other Greek organizations to follow.
